Executive Board Meeting
![]() As you know, the Alliance’s annual Executive Board Meeting was held in London on February 7th & 8th. The newly elected Board met for the first time to develop the Alliance’s strategic vision for the next three years in line with our ultimate vision of eradicating viral hepatitis. The meeting was also attended by Sylvie Briand, Director of WHO’s Pandemic and Epidemic Diseases Department (PED) in the Health Security and Environment Cluster (HSE) at WHO Headquarter in Geneva, who was able to offer the Board insightful guidance and the WHO perspective.
The 3-year strategic plan including 6 specific goals was developed and agreed. It was also decided that, as a global viral hepatitis organisation, the Alliance should extend its activities to viral hepatitis A and E. The strategic plan can be downloaded from our website at
http://www.worldhepatitisalliance.org/TheWHA/StrategicPlan.aspx
and we would like to thank all of you who sent their suggestions prior to the meeting.

Our work with the World Health Organisation
Secondment
As mentioned in our November issue, the Alliance has been seconding Raquel J.J. Peck, International Relations Director, part-time to the WHO Global Hepatitis Programme in Geneva to help move their work forward. Raquel has been working on various projects including the publication of regular Global Hepatitis Programme e-bulletins, the development of a communications strategy including a website revamp proposal and the production of collaterals, and the creation of a “success of stories” booklet which will feature best practices within the four axes of
Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis Infection: Framework for Global Action
. We are now looking to second someone full-time to WHO Euro to develop their viral hepatitis regional strategy.
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyons (France), January 14th
The Alliance participated in a meeting at IARC, WHO’s cancer research organisation, to lobby the inclusion of viral hepatitis B and C testing in the European Code Against Cancer, which they are in the process of reviewing. In order for this recommendation to be adopted it is critical that it is supported by sufficient evidence showing that testing lead to diagnosis and therefore prevents the development of liver cancer. However, we have learnt from a meeting with Mark Thursz, Secretary General of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) that such evidence might not exist and are currently exploring the issue further. In addition, we have requested that they publish data on the trends in cancer because many cancers, although more important in absolute numbers than liver cancer, are falling whereas liver cancer is rising (

World Hepatitis Day
|
|||
|
![]() As you know, the campaign will again focus on the concept of the three wise monkeys who ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’ following the huge success of this concept in 2012.
After much consideration it has been decided to slightly adjust the strapline of this year’s campaign to reflect the idea of denial more accurately and y
ou will soon receive a selection of WHD 2013 posters. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that a
customisable tool
is available from our website for you to personalise messages and/or visuals to suit your preferences and culture. The public health poster aimed at our
members based in low and middle income countries is still being developed.
All other elements of the campaign (i.e. digital and social media, video, SMS and radio campaign) are in the process of being developed and further updates will be given in the forthcoming issues of this bulletin. Meanwhile, our three wise monkeys have already been spotted outside WHO HQ in Geneva! |

London, January 30th
The Alliance participated in the first IAPO roundtable discussion on the future of embedding patient experiences in global policy. The theme, “Closing the loop: Aligning national and international healthcare policy with patient experiences”, generated an in-depth discussion about the importance of gathering robust evidence in support of patient-centred healthcare to effectively influence policy makers both at a national and global level, of taking a holistic approach to healthcare and understanding patient experiences, and ensuring patient involvement in our campaigns. The Alliance is a member of IAPO and supports their
Declaration on Patient-Centred Healthcare
